RAY - School Furniture

Client: Labofa A/S

RAY is a new generation of ergonomic school furniture based, on a patented seat principle and over seven years of development. The system is made in an international collaboration between the Irish design house, Perch and Danish designer Hans Thyge Raunkjær and has been made by the renowned Danish furniture producer, Labofa.

Having launched the product range at Orgatec in 2012 and showcasing it at the Stockholm Furniture fair in 2013, Labofa have received huge interest across Europe for this highly innovative and beautiful design.

The RAY chair focuses primarily on the design of the seat and the students' relationship to their work. Research has shown that the traditional “right angled” sitting can be detrimental to ones posture and health. As a result, sitting is linked with many of the ubiquitous lifestyle diseases. There are very few credible solutions on the market and even fewer for education. This furniture range is built around the philosophy of sitting in a more natural way, where forward pelvic rotation is encouraged and the students are enabled to move their entire body more freely, frequently and in a more neutrally loaded way.

It is much healthier for students, when task working, to sit with an open angle between their thighs and torso. Here, they can maintain a neutral and self supporting posture, while engaging their core muscles in a constant way.

PATENTED SEAT TECHNOLOGY
Ray encourages higher sitting, but allows students and workers to select any height they feel comfortable. This is enabled because of the patented flexible seat technology.
Sitting high on the RAY means that the front corners of the chair flex and deform, into the shape of a saddle seat.

In this position, the students' hips are abducted, allowing them to stabilise themselves more easily. Their pelvis is rotated forward, which enables their spine to align in a neutrally loaded position. Sitting like this does not require a backrest.
