Kinneir Dufort developed Ambicare’s specialist intellectual property into the world’s first portable and disposable photodynamic therapy (PDT) device for skin cancer treatment that won the Plastics Industry Industrial design award 2009 and received extensive news coverage.
The key objective of the development program was to rapidly develop a low cost, single use, portable PDT treatment system that would meet all the necessary clinical and regulatory requirements. The key technical challenge was in discovering a method to deliver a powerful dose of light in a portable package that would take the treatment out from the hospital environment and into the local doctor’s clinic or potentially the patient’s home.
